Christian Pulisic ripe for new Chelsea position as Thomas Tuchel plots £36m summer transfer plan
According to reports, Chelsea is planning to back Thomas tuchel in the summer transfer window with a number of big signings.
The Blues were reportedly keen to draft in cover for Ben chiwellin January after a series of unconvincing displays from Marcos Alonso in the England international’s absence.
Marina Granovskaia and the Chelsea hierarchy failed in doing so, having been unable to reach an agreement with Lyon, which could’ve brought Emerson back to Stamford Bridge, leaving Tuchel with diminutive options at left wing-back until Chilwell returns.
The west Londoners’ lack of activity in the transfer window spread panic among sections of the fanbase, afraid that the Chelsea board would add insult to injury following a relatively uninspired summer spree.
According to The Athletic, Tuchel and Chelsea’s board agreed to deviate away from the constructs of ‘spending big’ in January and instead prioritise a summer overhaul.
The report claims that Chelsea has already begun drawing up a list of targets, including Jules Kounde, Declan Rice, and Aurelien Tchouameni, handing the Blues squad just four months to prove why they deserve them a place in Tuchel’s first-team next season.
However, while the west Londoners’ summer shopping list emphasises strengthening the spine of the team, the European champions have also been linked with a player that poses a threat to Christian Pulisic’s future.
Chelsea has discussed the potential of bringing Atletico Madrid wide-man Yannick Carasco to the club at the end of the season, according to Footmercato.
The 28-year-old has seamlessly evolved from a forward into a wing-back over the last 12 months, playing a crucial role in helping Diego Simeone lift La Liga last season.
Carrasco’s ability to continue performing at the highest level while learning his trade in a new position hands Pulisic the blueprint to arming himself. If or when called upon, Pulisic has the same tools to become Tuchel’s Chilwell alternative.
The United States international has often featured at wing-back this season with varying levels of success and, seeing as Chelsea have a wealth of options at their disposal in attack, Pulisic could face a crossroads in his career where he could be forced to follow a similar route to Carrasco if he wants to stay in west London.
The Belgium international, which is valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, would be a superb addition to Tuchel’s side in the summer, adding great versatility to the squad, but his potential arrival could spell the end of Pulisic’s tenure.
