The daughter of a murder victim in South Australia shared her sentiments in the Supreme Court, expressing her desire for her father’s “piercing blue eyes” to be a haunting memory for his killer. Nathan Russell, a father of four, tragically lost his life in January 2021 at a location on Street Street in Adelaide’s CBD. The perpetrator, Dylan John Kowalski, received a life sentence for murder, with the parole period yet to be determined by Judge Anne Bampton.

During the court proceedings, Prosecutor Carmen Mateo SC described how Kowalski, wearing a balaclava, forcibly entered the building by breaking the front door and subsequently stabbed Russell twice. She emphasized that Kowalski’s intention was undeniably to inflict physical harm, using the weapon as a means to achieve this.

The court learned that it took only nine seconds for Kowalski to enter the building and carry out the murder. Russell’s daughter, Ulyshka de la Perrelle, conveyed her lack of sympathy for her father’s killer but expressed sadness for Kowalski’s parents, who had to grapple with his actions.

She directly addressed Kowalski, asserting, “Dylan, I know what you did, and everyone in this room knows what you did.” She continued, stating that it brought her solace to know that the unforgettable gaze of her father’s piercing blue eyes would forever be imprinted in Kowalski’s memory, possibly haunting him.

Belinda Russell, another family member, delivered her victim impact statement in court. She emphasized that Kowalski had made a conscious choice to end her brother’s life and must now face the consequences. She raised questions about Kowalski’s emotional state and whether he felt devastated enough to contemplate suicide, or if he was simply an exceptionally selfish and arrogant individual. She concluded by asserting that Kowalski’s imprisonment was a just and rightful consequence, taking away his freedom.

Kowalski’s defense attorney, Nick Vardas, informed the court that his client believed that someone associated with the Stewart Street location, known for methamphetamine usage, had threatened his mother. He pointed out that Kowalski had received menacing messages from individuals connected to Stewart Street, warning of potential harm to his mother.
